Burberry Unveils Its Fall/Winter 2019 Campaign

The English seaside never looked as glamorous as in the newly revealed Burberry Fall/Winter 2019 campaign. Gigi Hadid, Irina Shayk, and Sora Choi front the campaign, titled Tempest. Selected by Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci, these recurring, stand-out faces, as well as Fran Summers, He Cong, and Alexis Chaparro, perfectly embody the image of the British luxury fashion house.

Shot by Danko Steiner and Nick Knight, the dual-part campaign celebrates the structured and rebellious contrasts of British culture and weather, further evolving what Tisci first established in his debut Burberry collection last year. "I have been thinking a lot about England as a country of contrasts, from the structured to the rebellious and free, and I wanted to celebrate how these elements coexist," the designer said. "My first season for Burberry was about starting to develop my alphabet for the house, it was about identifying new letters and new codes. And now, I’m starting to put these letters together to begin writing my book here, to form the first chapter for a new era at Burberry,"

The classic is injected with modernity in this campaign and its featured collection: coats are transformed with shearling and cashmere scarf details, suits are worn with double-collar shirts, and blazers are paired with track tops and quilts. The collection also features reconstructed, sports-inspired rugby, polo, and football shirt-dresses along with British maritime-inspired striped coats, shell-buttoned silk shirts, and pleated skirts. There is a contemporary refinement of classic Burberry silhouettes and codes, presented by a resurgence of beige, new iterations of the famous monogram, and fresh interpretations of the iconic plaid.

The accompanying videos, also shot by Steiner and Knight, encapsulate the idea of contrast as the campaign "showcases the refined and the classic alongside the more relaxed and free, expressing two distinct viewpoints of one collection." While Steiner features the cast posed, polished, and framed by the sea, Knight presents a raw view of the models as they play with cameras in a studio, suggesting they could have shot the campaign themselves.

While Hadid is a returning face to the British brand–she shot her first campaign for the monogram collection in May–other models such as Freja Beha Erichsen and Heejung Park make their Burberry debut in Tempest. "It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Riccardo and my Burberry family again on another incredible campaign," Hadid said.
