Surprise! Santigold is Back

After two years, Santigold is finally back. The genre-hopping artist released her new dancehall mixtape, I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions, via Downtown Records this morning. The reggae-influenced mixtape showcases 10 tracks of rhythm guitar over Afro-Caribbean beats. Produced by Dre Skull, the majority of the album was recorded in only two weeks while the singer was nine months pregnant. The remaining tracks were unearthed from past sessions with producers like Diplo and Ricky Blaze.
Her new single, "Run the Road", is one of these previously unfinished songs. Produced by Ricky Blaze, the pensive track details the singer's battle with tour fatigue. Other songs on her mixtape feature commentary on the current political climate, from catcalling in "Coo Coo Coo" to the need to speak up for your beliefs in "Crashing Your Party".
Although she waited two years since her last album to release I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions, the singer plans to release an EP with another artist soon.
“I think I’m going to keep doing that for a while, rather than focusing on big, whole projects,” she said. “I don’t think people necessarily digest music in the same way. So I’m going to do fun stuff for a minute, a different way."
